Pulau Sabu juga dikenal dengan sebutan Sawu atau Savu. Penduduk di pulau ini sendiri menyebut pulau mereka dengan sebutan Rai Hawu yang artinya Tanah dari Hawu dan orang Sabu sendiri menyebut dirinya dengan sebutan Do Hawu. Nama resmi yang digunakan pemerintah setempat adalah Sabu. Masyarakat Sabu menerangkan bahwa nama pulau itu berasal dari nama Hawu Ga yakni nama salah satu leluhur mereka yang dianggap mula-mula mendatangi pulau tersebut.
